I help you steady yourself, think clearly and decide what you want, on your own terms

What I want you to know if you are carrying an affair on your own

This short video is about working through an affair on your own, whether you were the one betrayed or the one who strayed.

Video introduction by psychotherapist Mark Colclough, MA

At a glance

Infidelity therapy alone Copenhagen is one-to-one support for a single person dealing with an affair: because you discovered it, because you had it, or because your partner refuses to come. Your partner is not in the room. We meet for an hour at a time, in English or Danish, in person at my practice in central Copenhagen or online.

It sits under couples therapy alone Copenhagen. If you and your partner want to come together, see couples therapy after infidelity. If you are an international partner living in Denmark, see expat infidelity therapy alone. My articles on infidelity may help between sessions.

You can request a free 30-minute discovery call, book an hour, read about me or write to me.

Is this the right page for you?

This is for you if…

Infidelity therapy alone is for one person, in or near Copenhagen or online, who is dealing with an affair and wants to work on it on their own.

  • You discovered an affair, and the pictures in your head will not stop, day or night.
  • You had the affair, and you do not know whether to confess, end it quietly or leave.
  • Your partner has refused to come to therapy, but you need help to get through this.
  • There is no one you can safely tell, because of shame, children or shared friends.
  • The affair has shaken your sense of who you are, and you want to understand yourself again.
  • You swing between staying and going, and want to find out what you really want.
  • You want a private hour that is only about you, without your partner in the room.
  • You want to act in a way you will still respect when you look back in a year.

This is probably not for you if…

Client reviews

The reviews shown here are shared by clients who have worked with me in therapy and chosen to reflect on their experience. They are collected via Google and displayed through an independent verification service, offering an open and transparent picture of how my work is experienced.

Mark’s view

“Since my first client in 2004, I have seen how lonely an affair can be for each person in it. People who were betrayed often ask ‘How could I not have known?’, and people who strayed ask ‘If anyone knew the whole truth, would they still want me?’. Working with that question on your own, at your own pace, often steadies everything else.”

The importance of supervision

Good therapy begins with good supervision

I regularly meet with experienced senior psychotherapists in Denmark and abroad to reflect on my work, challenge my thinking, and continue developing my skills. This ongoing process supports the quality of my individual and couples therapy, helping me offer thoughtful, ethical, and effective care.

My focus is simple: excellence, integrity, and impact.

A typical situation

Henrik is 46, married with three children, and ended a year-long affair two months ago. His wife does not know. He cannot sleep, snaps at the children and keeps rehearsing a confession he never makes. He does not want couples therapy until he knows what he will say.

In our sessions, Henrik first gets his sleep and temper back under control. Then he looks honestly at why the affair began and what he wants now. He decides to tell his wife, plans how, and later they book couples sessions together.

I have presented this clinical example as a compound of 22 years of clinical practice.

When one-to-one sessions after an affair make sense

Sometimes the first repair after an affair is repairing your own footing.

An affair does not only happen to a relationship. It happens to each person in it, and each of you may need somewhere private to fall apart and put yourself back together.

Here you can say what you cannot yet say at home.

Did you discover the affair, and now cannot stop the pictures in your head?

Discovering an affair can bring intrusive images, sleepless nights and an urge to check every phone and receipt.

We work first on calming your body and mind, so you can function again.

Did you have the affair, and do not know whether to confess, end it or leave?

If you had the affair, you may be torn between confessing, ending it quietly or leaving. Each choice has consequences.

We think them through honestly, before you act.

Has your partner refused to come to therapy?

Your partner may say therapy is pointless, or that it is your problem to fix.

You can still work on your part, and sometimes that is what changes their mind.

Is there no one you can safely tell?

Many people tell no one: out of shame, to protect the children, or because friends are shared.

These sessions can be that one safe place.

Are you questioning who you are after this?

An affair can shake your sense of who you are: as a partner, a parent, a decent person.

We look at that with care, without either excusing or condemning.

Are you stuck between staying and going?

Some days you are sure you will stay; the next day you are sure you will go.

We slow that swing down until you can hear what you actually want.

If you see yourself here, book an hour or send me a few lines. You do not need to know what you want yet.

What we will work on in your sessions

Your footing first. Then your thinking. Then your decision.

We work with the shock or the guilt, the questions you cannot stop asking and the decision that lies ahead, from your side only.

How will we settle the shock enough for you to think?

We start with sleep, eating, work and the people around you. A steadier body makes clearer thinking possible.

Can you stop checking, searching and replaying?

Yes. We look at what the checking gives you and what it costs, and find other ways to feel safe enough to stop.

Can you face what you did without drowning in shame?

Yes. Guilt can be useful when it leads to honest responsibility. Shame mostly leads to hiding. We work towards the first.

Can you decide what to tell, and how?

Yes. Whether you were betrayed and want to confront, or had the affair and are thinking of confessing, we plan what to say, when and how.

Can you make a decision you will still respect in a year?

Yes. We weigh the relationship, the children, money and your own wellbeing one by one, so the decision is yours and not panic’s.

What would being through this look like for you?

For most people, it means sleeping again, thinking clearly and knowing which way they want to go.

Starting on your own

You do not need your partner’s permission, or a plan. You only need to come.

In the first hour, I ask what has happened, how you are coping and what weighs on you most right now. If another kind of help would suit you better, I will tell you.

What is my first hour like?

It is calm and private. You tell me as much as you want, and you leave with one or two steps for the coming days.

Is it different if I was betrayed or if I had the affair?

The starting point differs. If you were betrayed, we often begin with shock and trust. If you had the affair, we often begin with honesty and choices. Both lead to the same question: what do you want now?

Could my partner join me later?

Yes, if you both want that. Some people later move on to couples therapy after infidelity with their partner.

How often would I come?

Often weekly in the first weeks, then every two weeks as things settle.

Is a bundle worth it?

If you expect several sessions, a bundle sets a plan and lowers the price of each hour. See the bundle cards further down.

How will I notice I am getting through it?

The images and the guilt lose their grip, you feel more like yourself and the next step is clear. Then we decide together whether to continue.

How it works with me

  1. Book an hour, ask for a free 30-minute call or send me a message. A few lines are enough.
  2. The first hour, in English or Danish, in person or online, looks at how you are coping and what feels most pressing.
  3. Early on we meet weekly, then every two weeks as things settle.
  4. When you feel clearer, we decide together whether to continue, bring in your partner or finish.
  5. If you expect several sessions, a therapy bundle saves you 10 per cent and gives you a clear plan from the start. You can see the bundles just below.

Frequently asked questions

What is infidelity therapy alone?

One-to-one support for a person dealing with an affair, from either side. Sessions are one hour, in English or Danish, in person in central Copenhagen or online.

Is it only for the person who was cheated on?

No. I see people who were betrayed, people who had the affair and people who are not sure what their part was.

Can it help if my partner will not come?

Yes. You can still understand what happened, steady yourself and decide what you want, even if your partner stays away.

Should I tell my partner about my affair?

That is your decision. I help you think through what telling, or not telling, would mean for you, your partner and any children.

Will you tell me whether to leave?

No. I help you see your options clearly. The choice stays with you.

Can we work in English or Danish, and online?

Yes. I work in English and Danish, and sessions can be in person in central Copenhagen or online.

Will you judge me?

No. I take the affair seriously, and I take you seriously. Both are possible at once.

How many sessions might I need?

It varies. Some people need a handful of sessions around the first months, others want support for longer. We review together.

What does a session cost?

A 1-hour session costs 1,550 DKK and is VAT exempt. Online sessions cost the same and last just as long. All prices are on my prices page, and bundles save 10 per cent.
