Back-to-back couples therapy Copenhagen

Concentrated couples therapy, with sessions close together so nothing loses momentum

What I want you to know about back-to-back couples therapy

In this short video, I explain how back-to-back sessions give a couple enough time together to work properly, without having to start again every week.

Video introduction by psychotherapist Mark Colclough, MA

At a glance

Back-to-back couples therapy Copenhagen means several couples sessions booked close together: on the same day, on consecutive days or within one week. It suits couples whose schedules make weekly therapy hard, who travel in from elsewhere or who want to focus on one important issue properly. Sessions are in English or Danish, in person at my practice in central Copenhagen or online.

It is one way of doing couples therapy with me. There are also versions for one partner on their own, for EFT, for neurodiverse couples and for expat couples.

You can request a free discovery call, book a session, review my client policy or contact me directly.

Is this the right page for you?

This is for you if…

Back-to-back couples therapy Copenhagen is for couples who want concentrated time to work on their relationship. Sessions are booked close together, on the same day, on consecutive days or within one week. It suits busy lives, couples who travel in and couples who want depth.

  • Weekly sessions keep losing the thread, and you spend half of each session catching up on the week.
  • Your jobs, travel or young children make a fixed weekly appointment almost impossible to keep.
  • You live outside Copenhagen, or abroad, and a weekly journey to therapy is simply not realistic.
  • You want to work on one important issue properly, rather than touching it briefly every week.
  • You have tried therapy before and felt it stayed on the surface and never got deep enough.
  • You are facing a big decision together and want to give it your full, undistracted attention.
  • You both learn better with time to go deeper, rest overnight and come back the next day.
  • You want a clear plan, a clear aim and a format that fits around the life you actually have.

This is probably not for you if…

Back-to-back couples therapy suits couples who want concentrated time. If one of these describes you better, the page linked will suit you better.

Mark’s view

“Over more than 15,000 clinical hours, I have seen how much can shift when a couple has time. In a single hour, many couples only just reach the real conversation before it is time to go. With sessions close together, we can stay there. Underneath the arguments, one partner is often asking ‘Do you still choose me?’, while the other is asking ‘Can I ever stop failing you?’. Given enough time, both of those questions can be heard and answered. That is what concentrated work makes possible.”

Meet Mark, psychotherapist and EFT couples therapist

I am Mark Colclough, MA, a psychotherapist and EFT couples therapist specialising in expats and international couples. I work in English and Danish, from my practice in central Copenhagen and online.

Practising since 2004, I bring a bicultural perspective to work with individuals and couples across languages and cultural contexts. My work integrates depth-oriented psychotherapy with approaches such as integral psychotherapy, Gestalt therapy, Jungian psychoanalysis, and object relations theory. I also have specialist training in attachment theory, narcissism, and borderline personality disorder.

The importance of supervision

Good therapy begins with good supervision

I regularly meet with experienced senior psychotherapists in Denmark and abroad to reflect on my work, challenge my thinking, and continue developing my skills. This ongoing process supports the quality of my individual and couples therapy, helping me offer thoughtful, ethical, and effective care.

My focus is simple: excellence, integrity, and impact.

A typical situation

Anne and Peter live in Aarhus with two small children and two demanding jobs. For a year, they have argued about the same things: who does more, who has stopped trying, whether they still want each other. Weekly therapy was impossible to fit in, and a few online sessions never got beyond the latest argument.

They book two days in Copenhagen while the grandparents look after the children. On the first day, we map the pattern between them and reach the hurt behind it. That evening, they try one new way of talking at dinner. On the second day, we build on what happened and plan a few follow-up sessions. They go home tired, but closer than they have felt in a long time.

I have presented this clinical example as a compound of 22 years of clinical practice.

This is when back-to-back couples therapy with me makes sense

You want real progress, and a weekly hour keeps slipping through your fingers.

Back-to-back couples therapy is for couples who want to give their relationship concentrated attention. Instead of one session every week or two, we work in a block of sessions close together, then plan what comes next.

In my experience, many couples go deeper when they do not have to rebuild trust in the room each time. The work stays warm from one session to the next.

Do weekly sessions keep losing the thread before the next one?

In weekly therapy, a lot can happen between sessions. By the time you return, the thread may be lost and the first half hour goes on catching up.

Sessions close together let us pick up exactly where we left off.

Do your work, travel or children make a weekly slot impossible?

Long working days, shift work, business travel or small children can make a fixed weekly slot unrealistic.

A concentrated block lets you plan childcare and time off once, rather than every week.

Do you live outside Copenhagen, or even outside Denmark?

Many couples come to me from Jutland, Funen, Sweden or further away. A weekly journey to Copenhagen is not practical.

With back-to-back sessions, you can travel once and make the most of the time you are here.

Do you want to work on one important issue properly, without spreading it over months?

Sometimes a couple wants to work on one thing properly: a betrayal, a long-standing conflict, a decision about children or a move.

Concentrated time allows us to stay with that issue until it is genuinely understood, rather than touching it briefly each week.

Have you tried therapy before and felt it never got deep enough?

Some couples tell me earlier therapy felt like talking around the problem. Short, spread-out sessions can make that more likely.

Longer, connected time gives us space to slow down and reach what really matters.

Are you facing a decision and want to give it your full attention?

A big choice, such as whether to stay together, have a child or move country, deserves undivided attention.

Back-to-back sessions give you room to think it through together without the daily noise.

If this sounds like you, request a call or book a session, and we will plan a format that fits.

What back-to-back couples therapy with me will help you do

Time close together lets us understand the pattern, try something new and see what happens.

We use the first sessions to map the pattern between you, the middle ones to work with the feelings and needs underneath, and the last ones to plan how you will carry changes into daily life.

How do we use concentrated time well?

I plan each block with a clear aim, agreed with you both. We decide what matters most, how many sessions it needs and where the breaks go.

Can you see the pattern between you more clearly?

Yes. With sessions close together, the pattern is easier to spot because the last conversation is still fresh. Many couples find that very clarifying.

Can you practise new ways of talking while the work is fresh?

Yes. You can try a new way of talking in one session, use it at home that evening and come back the next day to look at what happened.

Can you reach the feelings under the arguments?

Yes. Longer, connected time often makes it possible to reach softer feelings, such as fear, longing or grief, that are hidden by anger or silence.

Can you make a clear decision together?

If you are facing a decision, we give it proper space. I help you hear each other fully before either of you chooses.

How do you carry the changes home?

Before the block ends, we agree what you will each practise and how you will check in with each other. We also plan follow-up sessions so the changes do not fade.

How your back-to-back couples therapy with me is planned

Back-to-back does not mean non-stop. I plan breaks and pace carefully.

We start with a short call to agree what you want to work on, how many sessions make sense and which format fits your calendar. Then I plan the block with you.

Several sessions on the same day

Two sessions can be held on the same day, with a proper break between them. This works well when you are travelling in, or can only take one day off.

Sessions on consecutive days

Sessions on two or three days in a row give you time to rest and reflect overnight, while keeping the thread of the work.

Sessions spread across one week

Several sessions within one week give continuity, with a little more space for ordinary life and practice in between.

Weekend sessions for busy schedules

Weekend sessions can sometimes be arranged, depending on availability. They suit couples with demanding jobs or children in school.

A pace your nervous systems can use

More hours are not always better. I keep the pace at a level where you can still think, feel and take in what is happening, and I adjust it if needed.

Follow-up after the concentrated block

We agree how the block will connect to what happens next. That might be a few follow-up sessions, ordinary couples therapy or a planned stop.

How it works with me

  1. Start with a free 30-minute call, or contact me with a rough idea of what you want to work on and which dates might suit you.
  2. We agree an aim and a format together: same-day sessions, consecutive days, sessions spread over one week or, where possible, a weekend.
  3. Your sessions take place at my practice in central Copenhagen, with planned breaks so the pace stays usable for both of you.
  4. Before the block ends, we agree what you will each practise at home and plan follow-up, so the changes last.
  5. If you expect several sessions, a therapy bundle saves you 10 per cent and gives you a clear plan from the start. You can see the bundles just below.

Frequently asked questions

What is back-to-back couples therapy?

It is a block of couples sessions booked close together, rather than one session every week or two. It suits couples who want concentrated work, travel in from elsewhere or cannot fit weekly appointments. Sessions are in English or Danish at my practice in central Copenhagen.

Can we book several sessions on the same day?

Yes. Two sessions can be held on the same day, with a proper break in between, when that suits your situation.

Can sessions take place on consecutive days?

Yes. Consecutive days keep the momentum going while giving you a night to reflect between sessions.

Can the work be spread over one week?

Yes. Several sessions can be spread across one week, which offers continuity without filling every day.

Do you offer weekend sessions?

Sometimes, depending on availability. Please ask when you get in touch, and I will tell you what is possible.

Is back-to-back therapy only for couples in crisis?

No. Many couples choose it simply because it fits their life better. If your relationship is in crisis right now, acute couples therapy may be the better starting point.

How many sessions will we need?

It depends on what you want to achieve. We agree a plan together before you start, and review it as we go.

Will so much therapy at once be too much?

It should not be. I plan breaks, keep an eye on how you are both doing and adjust the pace if needed.

What does back-to-back couples therapy cost?

A 2-hour couples therapy session costs 3,700 DKK including VAT. You can see all current prices on my prices page. Because back-to-back work involves several sessions, therapy discounts and bundles save you 10 per cent. Online sessions cost the same and last just as long.

How do we arrange back-to-back couples therapy?

Request a free 30-minute call or contact me, and tell me roughly what you want to work on and which dates might suit you.

We then agree a plan before you book.
