Emotion-focused support across cultures

I bring cultural understanding and emotional precision

Why emotion-focused expat therapy reaches beneath the conflict

In this short video, I explain how I use emotion-focused therapy to help you understand your international relationship when your partner is not attending across cultural and linguistic differences.

At a glance

Expat EFT couples therapy alone Copenhagen is individual relationship support for people whose emotions or relationships are being shaped by life between cultures.

I was born and raised in England and Denmark and, as an adult, have moved to, lived in and worked in nine countries. I combine that experience with emotion-focused therapeutic work.

An experienced psychotherapist offering psychotherapy and EFT couples therapy in Copenhagen

I am a certified psychotherapist (M.A.), the highest professional level recognised in both Denmark and England, and I work from my private practice in central Copenhagen as well as online.

For more than twenty years, I have worked with individuals, couples, and families across multiple countries and cultural contexts. My work integrates depth-oriented psychotherapy with a calm, grounded Danish presence.

Alongside my clinical practice, I have continued advanced training in couples therapy, supervision, and relational work. I am recently completed Master Class Further Training in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT therapy) for couples.

The importance of supervision

Good therapy begins with good supervision

I regularly meet with experienced senior psychotherapists in Denmark and abroad to reflect on my work, challenge my thinking, and continue developing my skills. This ongoing process supports the quality of my individual, couples, and family therapy, helping me offer thoughtful, ethical, and effective care.

My focus is simple: excellence, integrity, and impact.

This is when you need expat eft couples therapy alone with me

Emotional and cultural differences have become difficult to separate despite your best efforts to understand, adapt and communicate.

You need this service when your international relationship when your partner is not attending no longer makes sense through practical explanations alone. Strong reactions, emotional distance, repeated misunderstanding or loss of belonging are sufficient reasons to seek support.

In more than 21 years of practice, I have learned that culture shapes how people express need, conflict, vulnerability and care. I will help you identify the emotion beneath the pattern and determine what needs to change.

Is the relationship crisis taking over your everyday life?

You need support when conflict, fear or uncertainty is affecting your sleep, concentration, work or ability to be present with other people. A relationship crisis does not have to look dramatic before it deserves professional attention.

I will help you establish what requires action now and what can wait. If the crisis is already governing your day, book an focused session with me rather than waiting for your partner to become ready.

Are repeated conversations leaving you more confused?

If every attempt to resolve the problem produces another argument, withdrawal or contradiction, more talking is not necessarily the answer. You need a different structure for understanding why the same conversation keeps failing.

I help you identify what you are trying to communicate, what is being defended against and where your own response can change. You will leave with a clearer way to approach the next conversation and a plan for what to do if it deteriorates.

Does distance make you fear that the relationship is disappearing?

Silence, uncertainty or a change in your partner’s behaviour can make the relationship feel as though it is disappearing. You may seek repeated reassurance, monitor every signal or abandon your own limits to restore contact.

I help you reach the fear and longing beneath that urgency, steady yourself and communicate your need without pressure or self-abandonment.

Do you withdraw when closeness becomes emotionally overwhelming?

Emotional demands can feel intrusive, exhausting or impossible to answer correctly. You may become quiet, factual or distant because withdrawal seems like the only way to regain control.

I help you understand what the distance protects and express your limits before withdrawal becomes disconnection. You do not have to tolerate unlimited pressure in order to remain emotionally present.

Do you move rapidly between reaching out and shutting down?

You may urgently want connection and then push it away when it arrives. The movement between pleading, anger, withdrawal and numbness can happen so quickly that your own reactions become confusing.

I slow these shifts down with you, help you identify the underlying emotion and build a steadier response. Compassion for what you protect remains connected to responsibility for your impact.

Are you unable to decide whether to stay, leave or ask for change?

You may be trying to make a permanent decision while fear, grief or exhaustion is shaping every option. That does not mean the decision should be avoided, but it does mean you need a process you can trust.

I help you clarify what has happened, what has already been tried and what would genuinely have to change. You can then decide whether to stay, leave or set conditions for continuing based on evidence and values rather than panic or pressure.

If the crisis is active now, request a call or book a session so that we can establish what kind of focused support you need.

What expat eft couples therapy alone with me will help you do

Understanding your emotions matters, but the work must also change how you communicate, set limits and make decisions.

I will help you recognise the emotions driving the crisis, understand the protective responses that maintain it and create choices that reflect your actual needs. Insight must change what you do next.

My role is active and structured. I will help you stay with difficult emotions without allowing them to dictate every message, boundary or decision.

How will I help you reach the emotion beneath the crisis?

I will separate the focused event from the deeper hurt, fear, shame or longing surrounding it. The last argument may be important, but it is rarely the whole emotional crisis.

I bring clarity by identifying what you are protecting, which reactions are making the situation harder and what remains within your control. I will be direct about what cannot be known without your partner present.

Can you steady yourself before emotion takes over?

Yes. You can learn to recognise the first signs of fear, anger or numbness before you send the message, continue the argument or disappear from contact.

I help you slow the emotional sequence and choose a response that remains connected to your judgement. The goal is not emotional suppression. It is the freedom to act deliberately.

Can you communicate the hurt without escalating the crisis?

Yes, but vulnerable communication requires more than saying everything you feel. You need to know what you are trying to communicate and which protective reaction has taken over its form.

I help you move from accusation or silence towards clear language about hurt, need and limits. You will leave with words your partner has a better chance of receiving.

Can you set boundaries without closing your emotions down?

A boundary protects your wellbeing and integrity. It is different from punishment, prolonged silence or an ultimatum designed to force your partner to change.

I help you identify the emotion underneath the boundary, express the limit plainly and follow through consistently. You can protect yourself without becoming emotionally unreachable.

How will you make a decision you can trust?

You will separate panic, guilt and pressure from the evidence in front of you. We identify the minimum conditions required for continuing and what genuine change would look like.

I will offer my professional view and challenge avoidance, but I will not choose for you. The decision must remain connected to both your emotional truth and the reality of your partner’s behaviour.

Can your emotional changes alter the relationship?

Your changes can alter the pattern because you stop supplying the same automatic response. Greater steadiness, clearer needs and stronger boundaries often change what becomes possible.

I will not promise that individual work can make your partner change or save every relationship. It can help you see accurately, remain connected to yourself and choose your next step with integrity.

What happens when you begin expat eft couples therapy alone with me

You do not need your partner’s agreement or perfect words before you arrive. I begin with the present emotional crisis.

I listen carefully, identify the focused crisis and help you reach the emotion beneath your reactions. Your partner is not my client, and I will not diagnose or judge someone who is absent.

The work may continue through structured individual psychotherapy with me or move towards long-term couples therapy with me when both partners are ready. For continuity and significant savings, you can consider a structured therapy bundle.

What happens in my first Expat EFT couples therapy alone session?

I ask what happened, what feels important and which emotions are hardest to manage. We identify whether an focused decision, boundary or conversation needs priority.

Before the session ends, I will offer an initial emotional understanding and concrete next steps. You should know what to do next and what form of support I recommend.

When should Expat EFT couples therapy alone become structured psychotherapy?

Structured work is appropriate when the crisis reveals trauma, shame, anxiety, identity questions or longstanding emotional responses that need dedicated attention.

I can provide this through individual psychotherapy with me. The work remains focused on your experience, responsibility and choices.

When should your partner join the emotion-focused work?

Your partner should join when both of you are willing to examine the emotional relationship and can participate with enough honesty and safety for joint work to be useful.

If that becomes the right direction, long-term couples therapy with me supports relational development and healing.

How frequently should you attend during a relationship crisis?

our work may need to be closer together at first so that rapidly changing events and reactions do not repeatedly overwhelm the progress made in one session.

I will recommend the frequency I believe the situation requires. As clarity and stability improve, sessions can become less frequent. The schedule should serve the work rather than create dependency.

When does a structured EFT plan make sense?

A planned series makes sense when the emotional crisis requires continuity and you want the security of knowing when we meet next.

A structured therapy bundle can provide significant savings and a clear plan. I recommend one only when it serves a defined purpose.

How will you know when the focused work has done its job?

The focused phase has done its job when you can think, communicate and decide without the crisis repeatedly taking over. You should understand your own responses and know what you will do if the pattern returns.

You may then stop, continue with structured individual psychotherapy or begin joint couples therapy. I will help you make that transition deliberately rather than allowing therapy to continue without a purpose or endpoint.

Frequently asked questions

What is expat eft couples therapy alone with you?

It is focused individual, emotion-focused support for a relationship crisis when your partner cannot or will not attend.

I help you understand the emotions driving your responses, steady yourself and act on what is genuinely within your control.

When should I come to you for Expat EFT couples therapy alone?

Come when emotional distress is affecting your ability to think, function or communicate, or when waiting for your partner is keeping you stuck.

You do not need certainty about staying or leaving. The feeling that something is seriously wrong is enough reason to begin.

Can I use EFT if my partner refuses therapy?

Yes. Your partner’s refusal does not prevent you from understanding your emotional responses or changing your own position.

I help you clarify what you can ask for, what you cannot control and which boundaries or decisions are necessary.

Will EFT tell me whether I should stay or leave?

No method should make that decision for you. I will, however, be direct about what I observe and what I believe you should take seriously.

We will connect emotional truth with evidence, conditions and values so that your decision is not governed by panic or pressure.

Can EFT help when I keep reaching out and pulling away?

Yes. I help you understand the fear, hurt or overwhelm beneath these rapid changes and why the same reaction keeps returning.

You learn to steady yourself, express what you need and choose a response that does not recreate the crisis.

What happens in my first EFT session with you?

I begin with the present crisis and identify the emotions and reactions making it harder.

By the end, I aim to give you an initial understanding and clear next steps. You should know what we are working on and why.

Is attending EFT alone a form of couples therapy?

No. When you attend alone, I am working therapeutically with you. Your partner is not my client and cannot be assessed in their absence.

If joint work later becomes appropriate, we establish a clear couples therapy frame rather than quietly changing the nature of our work.

How many Expat EFT couples therapy alone sessions with you will I need?

One session may restore direction. A more established emotional crisis may require several sessions or a transition into structured psychotherapy.

I give you a clear recommendation and review it openly. Therapy continues because it is useful, not because it has become automatic.

What does expat eft couples therapy alone with you cost?

The current fees are available when you book an Expat EFT couples therapy alone session with me. Payment is by invoice and bank transfer.

If several sessions are appropriate, a structured therapy bundle can provide significant savings and continuity.

How do I begin expat eft couples therapy alone with you?

Book an Expat EFT couples therapy alone session with me and briefly tell me what feels most urgent.

You do not need your partner’s permission or a complete explanation. If timing is urgent, contact me directly.
