Expat divorce therapy Copenhagen

Therapy that understands life between cultures

I work fluently across British and Danish cultural realities

Why cultural understanding matters in therapy

In this short video, I explain how my bilingual and bicultural background helps you work with the emotional and relational reality of living between countries.

At a glance

Expat divorce therapy Copenhagen is individual and relationship support for internationals living with cultural transition, questions of belonging or strain inside a mixed-nationality relationship.

I was born and raised in England and Denmark. As an adult, I have moved to, lived in and worked in nine countries. This has given me direct experience of different languages, religious traditions, family expectations and cultural norms, which I bring into my work with international individuals, mixed-nationality couples and multicultural families. I do not simply conduct therapy in English. I understand both cultures from the inside and help you identify what is personal, relational and cultural.

Client reviews

The reviews shown here are shared by clients who have worked with me in therapy and chosen to reflect on their experience. They are collected via Google and displayed through an independent verification service, offering an open and transparent picture of how my work is experienced.

An experienced psychotherapist offering psychotherapy and EFT couples therapy in Copenhagen

I am a certified psychotherapist (M.A.), the highest professional level recognised in both Denmark and England, and I work from my private practice in central Copenhagen as well as online.

For more than twenty years, I have worked with individuals, couples, and families across multiple countries and cultural contexts. My work integrates depth-oriented psychotherapy with a calm, grounded Danish presence.

Alongside my clinical practice, I have continued advanced training in couples therapy, supervision, and relational work. I am recently completed Master Class Further Training in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT therapy) for couples.

The importance of supervision

Good therapy begins with good supervision

I regularly meet with experienced senior psychotherapists in Denmark and abroad to reflect on my work, challenge my thinking, and continue developing my skills. This ongoing process supports the quality of my individual, couples, and family therapy, helping me offer thoughtful, ethical, and effective care.

My focus is simple: excellence, integrity, and impact.

This is when you need expat divorce therapy with me

Life abroad has become emotionally or relationally difficult despite your best efforts to adapt, belong and make it work.

You need expat divorce therapy when living between languages, countries or cultural expectations is affecting your identity, wellbeing or closest relationships. There is no approved threshold you must cross. Feeling increasingly unlike yourself, isolated, misunderstood or uncertain about where you belong is enough reason to seek support.

In more than 21 years of practice, I have worked with the ways culture enters emotional life and relationships without announcing itself. I will help you distinguish relocation pressure from a deeper personal difficulty, and cultural misunderstanding from a relationship pattern that requires direct attention.

Are you struggling without the support you had at home?

You may be carrying work, family or relationship difficulties without the people, language and routines that once helped you recover. Even ordinary problems can become overwhelming when no familiar support is nearby.

I help you establish what requires immediate attention and build enough stability to think clearly. If distress is governing daily life, book an expat divorce therapy session with me.

Has living abroad changed how you understand yourself?

You may have lost professional identity, social confidence or a sense of belonging after relocating. The person you knew yourself to be can feel difficult to access in another language or culture.

I help you understand what has genuinely changed and what remains yours. The goal is not to return to an earlier version of yourself, but to build a life abroad in which you remain recognisable to yourself.

Are fear and uncertainty making you depend on constant reassurance?

Uncertainty about work, residence, relationships or belonging can make you monitor other people and seek answers that provide relief only briefly. Your confidence in your own judgement may begin to erode.

I help you identify the fear underneath the urgency, distinguish practical risk from emotional alarm and decide what information or support you genuinely need.

Are you withdrawing because adapting feels exhausting?

Speaking another language, decoding social expectations and repeatedly explaining yourself can leave you emotionally depleted. You may withdraw because contact feels like another demand.

I help you understand what the withdrawal protects and rebuild contact at a pace you can manage. Rest and privacy matter, but isolation must not become the only way you feel safe.

Do you feel caught between different cultures and versions of yourself?

You may feel too foreign in Denmark and unexpectedly different when you return home. Values, identity and belonging can become less certain when neither culture feels entirely yours.

I help you explore this tension without forcing a false choice between identities. You can build a coherent life that includes complexity without making you feel divided.

Are you unable to decide whether to stay or leave Denmark?

You may be trying to make a major decision while loneliness, panic, guilt or exhaustion is shaping every option. Staying and leaving can both feel like failure.

I help you separate the immediate crisis from the longer decision, clarify what is known and identify what would have to change for either option to become workable.

If the crisis is active now, request a call or book a session so that we can establish what kind of immediate support you need.

What expat divorce therapy with me will help you do

Understanding why life abroad became difficult matters, but therapy must also help you live, relate and decide differently.

I help you understand the personal, relational and cultural pressures maintaining the crisis, then turn that understanding into practical changes in boundaries, communication and daily life.

My role is active and structured. I will listen carefully, challenge assumptions and help you distinguish what requires adaptation from what should no longer be tolerated.

How will I help you understand the real crisis abroad?

The immediate problem may concern work, a relationship or loneliness, while the deeper crisis involves identity, belonging or the loss of a life that once made sense.

I bring clarity by separating these layers and identifying what is urgent. I will not reduce every difficulty to culture, but I will not ignore the international context shaping your experience.

Can you separate culture shock from a deeper personal difficulty?

Yes. Culture shock can produce fatigue, irritability, homesickness and self-doubt, but similar experiences may also reveal older anxiety, grief or relational patterns.

I help you examine timing, triggers and meaning so that we respond to the actual difficulty. Understanding context prevents both overdiagnosing normal adaptation and dismissing distress that needs attention.

Can you rebuild confidence in another language and culture?

Yes. Confidence often falls when professional competence, humour and emotional nuance no longer translate easily. You may feel less intelligent or socially capable than you know yourself to be.

I help you separate language limitations from self-worth and identify where confidence must be rebuilt through action, support and more realistic expectations.

Can you set boundaries with work, family and relationships abroad?

Yes. Expat life can create pressure to prove that the move was worthwhile, remain constantly available to family at home or accept unequal conditions because your options feel limited.

I help you identify which demands are unsustainable, communicate limits clearly and tolerate the discomfort that follows when you stop organising your life around everyone else.

How will you create a life abroad that fits you better?

We identify what drains you, what gives genuine belonging and which parts of your current life exist only through fear, habit or obligation.

I help you turn this understanding into decisions about work, community, relationships and daily structure. The aim is not simply to survive Denmark, but to create a life you can recognise as your own.

How will you make a clear decision about staying or leaving?

You will separate practical facts from panic, guilt and idealised expectations about either country. We identify what must change for staying to become sustainable and what leaving would realistically require.

I will offer my professional view and challenge avoidance, but I will not choose for you. The decision must be connected to your values and present reality.

What happens when you begin expat divorce therapy with me

You do not need a diagnosis or a complete explanation. I begin with what has become unmanageable in your life abroad.

I begin by identifying whether the main difficulty concerns your individual emotional life, the relationship between you or an immediate crisis that requires faster support.

You can choose structured expat psychotherapy with me, expat couples therapy together or work on your relationship with me alone. When the situation cannot wait, I also offer acute expat psychotherapy, acute expat couples therapy and acute support when your partner is not attending.

For emotion-focused work, you can choose expat EFT psychotherapy, expat EFT couples therapy, expat EFT work alone, or the corresponding acute formats when you need individual help, joint couples help or relationship support alone.

If ordinary weekly scheduling does not fit your international life, I offer back-to-back psychotherapy, back-to-back couples therapy and back-to-back work alone. You can also arrange weekend psychotherapy, weekend couples therapy, weekend work alone, or travel specifically for fly-in psychotherapy, fly-in couples therapy or fly-in relationship work alone.

What happens in the first focused expat session?

I ask what has happened, what feels most urgent and how life abroad is affecting your ability to cope. We identify whether stabilisation, a decision, a boundary or practical support needs priority.

Before the session ends, I will offer an initial understanding and concrete next steps. You should know what we are working on and what form of continued support I recommend.

How do you work with culture without stereotyping me?

I ask what your background and present environment mean to you rather than assuming nationality explains your behaviour. People from the same country can experience identity, family and emotion very differently.

I remain curious about culture while keeping the focus on your individual experience, responsibility and choices. You will not be required to represent an entire country.

When should our work become long-term psychotherapy?

our work should become structured psychotherapy when the immediate crisis has settled but anxiety, identity, trauma, grief or recurring relational patterns still need sustained attention.

You can continue through long-term individual psychotherapy with me. Containing the emergency matters, but it is not always the same as completing the deeper work.

Can you attend while travelling or living outside Denmark?

Online sessions can support continuity when work, travel or relocation places you outside Copenhagen, provided you have privacy and a suitable environment.

I help you decide whether online or in-person work fits your situation and recommend a frequency based on urgency, time zones and stability.

When does a structured expat divorce therapy plan make sense?

A structured plan makes sense when the crisis requires more than one conversation and you need protected time for continued individual work.

A structured therapy bundle can provide significant savings and continuity. I recommend one only when it serves a clear purpose.

How will you know when the our work has done its job?

The focused phase has done its job when you can think, function and decide without repeatedly being pulled into the same emergency. You should understand what is happening and know what to do if the distress returns.

You may then stop, attend less frequently or continue with structured psychotherapy. I help you make that transition deliberately rather than allowing therapy to continue without an endpoint.

Frequently asked questions

What is expat divorce therapy with you?

It is immediate individual support when life abroad has created a psychological, relational or practical crisis that you can no longer manage alone.

I help you understand the difficulty in personal and cultural context, stabilise what is urgent and decide what needs to change.

When should I come to you for expat divorce therapy?

Come when anxiety, loneliness, identity loss, work or relationship pressure is affecting your ability to function abroad.

You do not need a diagnosis or perfect explanation. If your usual ways of coping no longer work, that is enough reason to begin.

Can you help with loneliness and isolation abroad?

Yes. We examine both the emotional experience of isolation and the practical conditions maintaining it.

I help you understand what makes connection difficult and identify where community, independence and meaningful contact need to be rebuilt.

Can you help me decide whether to leave Denmark?

Yes. I help you separate temporary overwhelm from a more settled recognition that your present life is not sustainable.

I will not tell you which country to choose. We establish the evidence, values and conditions needed for a decision you can trust.

Can you help when I no longer feel like myself abroad?

Yes. Relocation can unsettle professional identity, confidence, belonging and the roles through which you once recognised yourself.

I help you understand what has been lost, what is changing and how to build a coherent identity that does not require you to become someone else to belong.

What happens in my first expat session with you?

I begin with what feels urgent and ask how international life is affecting the difficulty.

By the end, I aim to give you an initial understanding and clear next steps. You should know what we are working on and why.

Do you offer expat divorce therapy in English?

Yes. I work in English and Danish with international clients from many cultural backgrounds.

You do not need perfect English. I slow important conversations down and clarify meaning when emotional nuance is difficult to translate.

Can I attend expat divorce therapy online?

Yes. Online psychotherapy is available when you have enough privacy and stability to engage with the work.

I help you decide whether online or in-person sessions are more appropriate for your immediate situation.

What does expat divorce therapy with you cost?

The current fees are available when you book an expat divorce therapy session with me. Payment is by invoice and bank transfer.

If continued work is appropriate, a structured therapy bundle can provide significant savings and continuity.

How do I begin expat divorce therapy with you?

Book an expat divorce therapy session with me and briefly tell me what has become difficult.

If the available times do not reflect the urgency, contact me directly.
