Acute couples therapy alone Copenhagen

Focused, same-day sessions when your relationship feels on the edge

Work through the crisis and find solid ground again

Meet Mark

In this video, I explain how I work as a psychotherapist and couples therapist. My goal is for you to regain calm and perspective fast.

You will see how my precise, deep and focused sessions bring relief and a sense of direction.

At a glance

Sometimes you reach the limit of what your system can handle. Overload, arguments, or silence may leave you feeling helpless and alone.

My acute sessions give you space to breathe and understand what just happened. We will work to calm your emotional responses so you can both think clearly again.

This is often the first step toward repair – beginning with you both, not the argument.

Client reviews

The reviews shown here are shared by clients who have worked with me in therapy and chosen to reflect on their experience. They are collected via Google and displayed through an independent verification service, offering an open and transparent picture of how my work is experienced.

An experienced psychotherapist offering psychotherapy and EFT couples therapy in Copenhagen

I am a certified psychotherapist (M.A.), the highest professional level recognised in both Denmark and England, and I work from my private practice in central Copenhagen as well as online.

For more than twenty years, I have worked with individuals, couples, and families across multiple countries and cultural contexts. My work integrates depth-oriented psychotherapy with a calm, grounded Danish presence.

Alongside my clinical practice, I have continued advanced training in couples therapy, supervision, and relational work. I am recently completed Master Class Further Training in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT therapy) for couples.

The importance of supervision

Good therapy begins with good supervision

I regularly meet with experienced senior psychotherapists in Denmark and abroad to reflect on my work, challenge my thinking, and continue developing my skills. This ongoing process supports the quality of my individual, couples, and family therapy, helping me offer thoughtful, ethical, and effective care.

My focus is simple: excellence, integrity, and impact.

What acute couples therapy alone can help you do

You cannot do your partner’s part of the relationship for them. But there is still a great deal you can understand, influence and change from your side.

When a relationship is in crisis, your attention naturally moves towards your partner. Why are they withdrawing? What do they mean? What can you say to make them understand? The more frightened you become, the easier it is to believe that everything depends on getting a different response from them.

I help you bring some of that attention back to what you can actually work with. We look at the cycle between you, what happens inside you when it is triggered and what you can begin doing differently.

Understand the relationship cycle you are caught in

The argument itself is often only the visible part of the problem. Underneath fights about trust, intimacy, communication, children, sex or money, I often find a repeating emotional pattern that neither partner knows how to stop.

I help you map that cycle from your side. You begin recognising what triggers you, what you do next and how your response may affect what happens between you. Once the pattern becomes visible, you have something concrete to work with.

Express your need for connection without chasing it

If distance makes you anxious, you may try harder and harder to restore connection. More messages, more questions, more explaining and more attempts to talk can feel completely logical when you are frightened that the relationship is disappearing.

I help you understand the vulnerable need underneath that pursuit and find a clearer way of expressing it. You can still reach for your partner without allowing fear to determine how urgently or repeatedly you do it.

Create space without disappearing

If conflict overwhelms you, your instinct may be to shut down, leave the conversation or avoid the subject altogether. That may protect you temporarily, but prolonged withdrawal can also increase uncertainty and distress between you.

I help you recognise when you are becoming overwhelmed and find ways to step back without abandoning the relationship. You can ask for time, regulate yourself and return to difficult conversations with greater choice.

Change your side of the relationship

You cannot make your partner communicate differently, become emotionally available, attend therapy or choose the relationship. Trying to control those things can leave you exhausted and increasingly disconnected from yourself.

I help you identify what genuinely belongs to you: your communication, boundaries, emotional reactions and choices. Changing your side does not guarantee that your partner changes theirs, but it gives you back agency in a situation that may currently feel completely beyond your control.

Make sense of contradictory reactions

You may move rapidly between wanting your partner close and wanting them nowhere near you. Hurt can become anger, reassurance can suddenly feel unsafe, or you may initiate contact and regret it almost immediately.

I help you understand what drives those shifts so they stop feeling random. When you recognise what activates your need for closeness and what suddenly activates protection, you have more freedom in how you respond.

Become clearer about what happens next

Acute therapy alone is not automatically about saving the relationship. You may need to repair something, establish stronger boundaries, invite your partner into couples therapy or begin asking whether staying is still right for you.

I help you separate the intensity of the crisis from the decisions you actually need to make. The aim is not certainty about the entire future. It is enough clarity to know what your next step should be.

If you want to know whether my way of working fits you, book a free 30-minute discovery call. We can talk about what brings you to therapy and whether my way of working feels right for you.

What happens when you come to acute couples therapy alone

You do not need your partner’s agreement, a complete relationship history or a decision about whether you are staying together. Bring me what is happening now. We start there.

When you come to see me, I want to understand what has happened, what the relationship looks like now and what feels most urgent. You can arrive angry, frightened, confused or completely exhausted. You do not need to organise everything before walking through my door.

I work actively with you from the beginning. We separate the immediate crisis from the larger relationship, identify the pattern between you and decide where your attention can make the greatest difference.

Your first session starts with what is happening now

I want to know why you need help today. Something has changed, escalated or become impossible to continue carrying alone. We begin there rather than spending the entire first session documenting the history of your relationship.

As we talk, I help you identify what needs attention immediately and what can wait. My aim is that you leave understanding more about what is happening and with a clearer idea of what you can do next.

I help you slow the crisis down

When relationship distress becomes acute, your thoughts and emotions can move incredibly quickly. You react to a message, a silence, a conversation or a change in your partner and suddenly find yourself several steps ahead imagining what it all means.

I help you slow that process down. We separate what has actually happened from what you fear may happen and create enough emotional space for you to make decisions rather than simply reacting.

We work with your part of the relationship pattern

Although your partner is not in the room, the relationship is. We can examine what happens between you, how you respond when connection feels threatened and how pursuit, withdrawal or contradictory attachment reactions may keep the cycle moving.

I will also help you remain clear about the limits of that work. Understanding your part does not mean taking responsibility for your partner’s behaviour. We work seriously with what belongs to you and leave what belongs to them where it belongs.

You leave with something you can use

Insight is useful, but when your relationship is in crisis you also need to know what to do when you leave my practice. We translate what we understand into changes you can actually make.

That may involve communicating differently, stopping an escalating conversation, giving space without disappearing, setting a boundary or deciding that something does not need to be resolved today. I want the work to follow you out of the room.

We decide what kind of support makes sense next

Sometimes acute support is enough to help you regain your footing. Sometimes your partner becomes willing to participate and the work naturally moves towards couples therapy Copenhagen. At other times, what emerges belongs more clearly to your own history, attachment or emotional life and is better explored through individual psychotherapy Copenhagen.

I will tell you what I think would be useful rather than automatically recommending more therapy. We decide together whether the next step is working alone, working as a couple or taking what you have learned and continuing without me.

Continuing therapy can be planned around what you need

You do not need to commit to ongoing therapy before we have even met. Start with the situation you have now. If one session is enough, we stop there. If continuing makes sense, we discuss what the work would actually be for.

If you want to plan several sessions, I also offer therapy bundles that we can discuss once we have decided that a therapeutic journey together makes sense. You remain in control of whether and how you continue.

Frequently asked questions

How fast can I book an acute session?

I offer same-day appointments when availability allows. If your relationship is in crisis, contact me directly or check the booking calendar for the earliest available session.

Can we speak with you in English?

Yes. I work in English and Danish and regularly work with international couples living in Copenhagen and elsewhere.

Do you offer a free thirty minute call before I book?

Yes. You can request a free 30-minute discovery call with me before deciding whether to book. We can briefly discuss what is happening, what you need and whether an acute session is the right next step.

Do you offer bundle cards for ongoing therapy?

Yes. If, after the acute session, we decide to plan a therapeutic journey together, I offer bundle cards for ongoing sessions. We can discuss the options and decide what best fits the work we are planning.

Can we have our acute couples therapy session online?

Yes. I offer acute couples therapy both in person in Copenhagen and online. If getting to my practice would delay you receiving help, an online session can be the fastest option.

Can we book an evening or weekend session?

Yes, when I have availability. I offer appointments outside normal working hours because relationship crises do not conveniently happen between nine and five. Check my booking calendar or contact me directly.

What if I feel ashamed, guilty or responsible for the crisis?

Bring that into the session. I will help you separate what you are responsible for from what belongs to your partner and what belongs to the pattern between you. We can take responsibility seriously without turning the session into an exercise in blame.

Are our couples therapy sessions confidential?

Yes. What you discuss with me is confidential and handled in accordance with my professional and GDPR obligations. I will explain the confidentiality framework clearly if there is anything you are unsure about.
